Algonquin Park is offering some tips to help you during black fly season.

According to the park, 42 species of black flies have been recorded in Algonquin, with just four being known to bite humans. The park says that adult black flies start becoming active in mid-May, but are at their busiest in late-May and into June.

The park says they’re most active on hot, humid days. The best way to avoid being bitten is wearing long clothing or even a big jacket as well as using bug spray.

They’re known to lay eggs near bodies of water and a bite can result in cuts and skin irritation.
